Oops, The Order Spilled! (Dasher Tips) – What to Do When Things Go Wrong on the Road

Doordash Order Spilled

Alright, let’s talk about something every Dasher dreads, but most of us run into eventually.

You’ve picked up the order, everything’s good, you’re on your way to the customer… and then it happens.

The bag tips over. A drink leaks. The food spills. 😬

Now what?

If this is your first time dealing with a spilled order, don’t worry, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, and I’ve made some rookie mistakes so you don’t have to.

So let me walk you through what to do when this kind of thing happens.

First of all: Don’t try to fix it all on your own.

I know the instinct. You feel responsible. You feel bad. When I was new, I actually called the restaurant myself and asked them to make a new order. But here’s what I learned: stores won’t remake an order unless DoorDash confirms they’ll be paid for it.

So don’t pay out of your own pocket.
Don’t try to reorder it yourself.
Don’t take the whole burden.

Call DoorDash Dasher Support right away.

Let them know what happened. Tell them clearly:

“Hey, the order spilled while I was in transit. What do I need to do?”

From there, Support will take over and decide the best course of action.

Here’s how it usually plays out.

If it’s just a spilled drink

Let support know, and they’ll call the customer to explain what happened. Most of the time, they’ll just refund the drink and you’ll deliver the rest of the food like normal. Easy, no stress.

You’ll still get full pay for the delivery, and the customer will be taken care of.

If the entire order is damaged

If the food is no longer deliverable, support will contact the store. In my case, it seems that support checked with store if it’s still possible to remake the order.

  • If the store agrees to remake, you’ll be unassigned.
  • If the store refuses to remake: The order gets canceled, and again – you get half pay. Customer will also get the refund.

Why this matters

Here’s what you don’t want to do:
Don’t try to fix it by placing a new order and paying for it yourself. DoorDash won’t reimburse you for that. Trust me – you’ll end up frustrated and out of pocket.

Always, always call Dasher Support and let them handle it. That’s what they’re there for.

Final Thoughts from a Fellow Dasher

Mistakes and spills happen. It’s part of the job. But knowing how to handle them the right way makes all the difference.

So the next time an order spills, don’t panic. Don’t blame yourself. Don’t go out of your way to fix something that support can solve in minutes.

Just remember:
📞 Call Dasher Support.
💸 Don’t pay out of pocket.
✅ Let Dasher Support handle it.

You got this.
