Redcard Declined? Here’s How to Handle It (Dasher Tips)

Redcard Declined Here’s How to Handle It

If you’ve been delivering for a bit, you’ve probably come across Redcard orders, you know, those grocery or shop-and-deliver orders where you pick up the items, head to the checkout, and then pay using the Redcard Doordash gave you.

Most of the time, these orders go smooth. I shop, line up at the register, swipe the Redcard, and off I go. But let me tell you, there was one time it didn’t go that way—and I want to share that experience with you so you’ll know exactly what to do if it ever happens to you.

So What Happens If Your Redcard Doesn’t Work?

You’re at the checkout counter. The cashier scans everything. You pull out your Redcard like usual… swipe, insert, or tap, and then you get an error.
Card declined.

Yup, it happens. And it can leave you standing there awkwardly with a line forming behind you.
If this happens to you, Here’s what you should do

1. Call Doordash Support Right Away

Just open the app, go to the order, tap Help, and contact support.
Let them know:
“Hi, I’m trying to check out this Redcard order, but the card isn’t working at the register.”
The rep will then check the order on their end and see what might be causing the issue.

2. Common Cause: Price Mismatch from Substitutions

In my case, I had substituted an item (with the customer’s approval, of course), but the total price changed. The Redcard only had funds for the original order total, so it declined at checkout.

Support told me that this can happen when the new item is more expensive than the original. But the good news? They were able to load additional funds onto the Redcard, and after a minute or two, the transaction went through just fine.

3. If It Still Doesn’t Work…

Now, there are times when the Redcard still won’t work, even after support tries to troubleshoot.

In one situation, the rep asked me if I’d be willing to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed. I thought about it for a few seconds, but honestly, I was new at the time and didn’t feel comfortable fronting the money.

So I politely said,
“I’m not able to pay out of pocket right now.”

Support understood and told me it was totally okay. They unassigned the order for me, and since I had already arrived at the store and done part of the work, they gave me half pay for my time and effort.

Bottom Line

It can feel stressful when something like this happens, especially if you’re new. But here’s the truth: it’s not your fault, and you’re not alone.

Here’s a quick recap of what to do if your Redcard doesn’t work:
✅ Call support immediately
✅ Explain the issue clearly
✅ Let them try to fix it (they may reload the Redcard)
✅ If it still doesn’t work, decide if you’re willing to pay out of pocket (you’re not required to)
✅ If not, support can unassign the order and you may still get half pay

Stay calm, and communicate. Support is there to help, and as long as you’re doing your best, everything will be okay.
